I tell myself this cause I've almost toppled over in the MP3 player market & I think the best value is the iRiver H340 40GB player
it's not the prettiest player around, but it's comparable size & price to an equivalent ipod however it also offers
1) FM radio
2) audio recording (of apparently awesome quality, we're talking the ability to create digital concert bootlegs etc)
3) can play video (with a firmware upgrade)
All that aside I did pee in my pants a little when I saw the iPod Nano in black.... if there was a 40gb version I think I'd be on it.
Well I want one because I don't have an MP3 player of any sort. Flash memory protection against me dropping expensive shit all the time is a good thing. 2Gb/4Gb > No MP3 Player.
Pity it doesn't come in silver. I'll have to settle for black.
* I've destroyed a Nokia 9100 over time by dropping fairly regularly. I've now started on a handspring treo 600 that replaced it. So far I've limited it to a few chips from various locations.
is this strictly flash memory though, isn't it built off one of those micro drive majiggers which is essentially a HDD in a CompactFlash card case...
I figured that was the case cause I thought thats what the mini was. if this thing came in 40GB I'd be alot more excited, I'd almost be willing to do without other features such as recording, radio & video just for the sheer weenieness of it.
& I don't just mean weenie as in small
Overall don't get my wrong, this is hotter than a peri peri covered turd. I just wish Apple would stop resting on their laurels & get with the program, release an iPod that does all the other shit as well....
I hate them cause I have pretty much 1 chance to buy an MP3 player & I know soon as I do, the one that does everything for the price will wander along.....

A friend has one of those iRiver beasties, and they are damn nice. Sure they aren't as small as 8balls winky, but feature-wise they are pretty rich and still fit in a pocket.
I have an iPod, 20G. It holds more music on it than I can listen to, it cost a lot, and it's not multifunctional or even that simple to synch to. But it's kinda sexy and you can check your hair in the reflection on the back.
Oh yeah, and there's a risk the battery might lobotomise itself.
The iRiver I saw had something like 18 hours battery, AM/FM, dictaphone, colour screen, the ability to pump photos on to it DIRECT FROM YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA, plus video etc as 8ball mentioned.
I think I made a bad choice when I bought the iPod, but still can't help but love it.
I can't seem to find stuff about whether the nano is flash based, but I am pretty certain it isn't. I remember reading about Apple cleaning out the entire first run production of Toshiba-or-someones brand new, teeny-weenie HDDs and I assume it was for this thing.
Fuck they're sexy though, I want to lick one, one that a girl has already licked.
P.S. Are you lot getting my gmails? I am getting weird bounce messages every once in a while and my conclusion is that it's because I am in the turdsack that is England.
Yeah the iRiver h340 does all that, however the copy stuff straight from your camera is dependant on your camera, I think only really new model cameras handle that, which is a shame..
the other problem is that the h340 seems to be getting phased out, stock in the UK & US are drying up, which isn't a huge problem, I can still get em here. but I feel I shoudl wait for the new model. which hasn't been announced. & may never...

they are flash based it turns out, had a play with one in the apple store here and I personally wouldn't buy one.
They are lush little devices and the colour screen is nice, but it feels waaaay to flimsy for the cost involved. I was dialling through tracks holding it in one hand and the entire thing flexed under my thumb...
