Bling Bling?

Yes, I Googled for 'Bling Bling' for some obscure reason, mainly due to boredom. (In truth I was checking if I could use it in my last post, but I couldn't, it doesn't mean 'money')

Anyway, I happened across this dude who I'd seen stuff from before. He's built his own site now, blingmethod.com - how a geek gets their bling bling.

I'd seen version 1 and 2 previously, but he's gone sooooo far past the call of duty I have to send you all there. I am still working my way through the series as I put this post together and I am in awe.

I found yesterday that the geek bling bling can't be avoided.
The big arse case fan on the doom3 box (the entire reason it was built 2 years ago - Skaffen knows what I'm talking about) crapped itself a couple of days ago. Even though there are 5 other fans doing various things I still worried about overheating. I rocked up to the local Jaycar and the only fans I could get were ones with built in neon lights and variable speeds. I ended up getting the cheapest (fucking $20) and now have a rainbow coloured light display out of the back of the box. While it is a bit too gay pride in colour for me it still looks cool. I now have a desire to whack a perspex window on the side.
Something else I found yesterday was that the pure electronics nerd is even weirder/scarier than the computer geek. You get really freaky old guys in Rod Irving byinng tiny bits of shit for weird arse stuff they are whacking together in their back shed. You also get the rice-box car boot stereo freaks there as well.

For some reason I have completely reversed my previous addiction to geek bling bling. My previous pc was encased in an entirely perspex case, making everything quite visible under some delightful blue neon. Heat was a problem though.

Now I'm running a black anodised aluminium Lian-Li beastie, with seperate convection zones for airflow over elements and stuff like that. Modular power supply love and all out goodness. The bit that cracks me up the most is the memory, which came with attached heatsinks that have fucking LEDs on them, lighting up from green through red as you load up on memory useage . But it's all now hidden behind gorgeous matt black, which is kind of a waste.

(link to image of RAM cause you can't fucking post images in comments for some reason)
But, I now have a few spare old boxes, plus an extra perspex case that's just BEGGING for fish or something to live in it.

In fact, if you've got old shit, hand on to it for me, let's go stupid and make your respective wives/girlfriends worry.

Bugger - I just gave away my old PII 266 yesterday, after first ripping out the SCSI controller and drives.
Gave it to PCs for Kids.
Don't worry though. My recent e-bay purchases have been:

1 x 12 RU rack cabinet which fits nicely under the desk.
1 x Cisco 2503
2 AUI -> Ethernet transceivers + Cisco serial crossover
1 x Sun Netra t1125, which I on-sold for minor profit.
1 x Sun SPARC 5.
The above have been squeezed into the rack with another Cisco 2500 + two 1900 switches.
I'm watching a Netra X1 and D130 array as well.
Green LEDS are somehow relaxing and mesmerising when the lights are switched off. Plus I need to recertify my Cisco shit so it is handy having stuff to fuck up/try shit out on.
