Network cable?

I'm going to set up a wirless network, but in the mean time want to do it with a cable as it might be a few weeks before the wireless is up and running. I've got the 3D gear running on desktop and laptop now, burning to cd constantly to exchange files is driving me insane, and if networking cables are $30 or so I will gladly pay just to use it for those few weeks.

What cable do I buy? Can I just get it at Dick Smiths or some computer dork store? I don't really have time to go to a swapmeet, that would lose me a day.

Does networking let you set up a shared folder, so I can save to that folder from either machine and the other machine will see the updates? Or do you have to send files back and forth between them, or do I just keep the project on say the desktop and access the files from either machine?

You need NICs in each machine (which I'm pretty confident you do, the lappy will guaranteed and I'm sure I sent some your way a while ago) and then you'll need a cross-over cable for network connectivity.

Yes, you can simply create a shared folder and then mount that as a directory on the other machine, select 'connect at login' or whatever and the desktop will re-mount that folder every time you power it on. I would recommend copying everything out of that folder before doing work on it though, if it's not local to the desktop then you'll be caning the network and BOTH hard drvies whenever you access and work on the data from the 'render' machine. Not normally a problem, but you may as well treat that portable HDD with kid gloves.

Cross-over cable should set you back around $12, though 8ball may have one handy now that he's gone wireless? You should be able to use this cable later to connect the desktop direct to your wireless lovemachine rather than shelling out for an extra wireless NIC too.

Stompy, if you do this, do NOT install the same game on both machines EVER. You will run the risk of turning you and your boys into something scarily similar to me :) And the wife will rip your nuts off.

With you fuckers all on wireless broadband love I may as well whack my game server back on the interspank and see what ping times are like from Melb/Geelong to Sydney. I know the round trip isn't great for high speed gaming, but I've found that the dedicated server with only 4 or 5 gamers on it makes up for that, especially with RTSs like Dawn of War...

I think I do have a spare cross-over cable actually. it's not particularly long maybe 3 meters. but will let you get hooked up easily. Dick Smith DO carry crossover network cables. I think I paid about $20 for my one. the important thing to remember is that if that you get a CROSSOVER cable. not a straight through cable as this will be no good to you (till you get a hub).

To get it working, get your crossover cable, plug into appropriate holes (hahaha) open a windows explorer (not IE) window & type in \\nameoftheremotemachine in the address bar. (for example I think your lappy was called bigredfirengine or soemthing.) hopefully if you got the right name, you'll be presented with shared folders on that machine. try desktop to lappy first as I'm sure you've got shared folders on the lappy.

Crossover cables are too easy, hopefully your IP's will all sort themselves out nicely. if not give me a call & I'll revert to my days of tech support & talk you through it.

You could also try sharing your dial up internet connection from the desktop to the lappy but thats another story

I also just noticed the swapmeet is at Box Hill tomorrow (24th), in relation to that i also just noticed that my printer cartridge is low (low I haven't printed shit yet you CUNT) so I'll problaby shoot down sometime tomorrow & have a poke around, if you want to come along let me know. & we'll see if it works out.

That said if you cant make it, just go to Dick Smith Powerhouse cause they don't charge you $3 entry

Powerhouse - they don't charge $3 entry - but they charge twice what a cat-5 cross over is worth.
Fuckers. At least the game prices are mostly OK.
I buy my home networking stuff from Jaycar.
(No Skaff - I don't steal shit from work - it would be too dangerous).

Dawn of War multiplayer - I'd be up for that.

TML tech support:
The story so far...

Skaffen got me to ring 8ball.
8ball got me to enter bodgey IP numbers and the computers reckon they are talking to each other now (little connected screens in toolbars are blinking prettily) but I can't see shared folder from other machine yet....

Will bodgey IPs fuck up my dial up?

I should add - thanks fellas for all the help today. This stuff is a fucking pain in the ass when it's your own shit, I can imagine the crushing sense of ennui which decends like a food-poisoned fart when someone else rings up making it your problem as well. It's like someone else doing a wet fart in your jocks for you, and then shrugging their shoulders and saying "so, can I get a lift to the laundromat?"

No the IP's you entered shouldn't affect your dialup account. unless of course you can't connect to your dialup account anymore. then I change my comment to IP's you entered could affect your dialup account.

Anyway if the computers think you're connected. it's just a matter of getting the folders between the 2 visible. One way to double check connectivity is to ping the other computers IP.

go Start-Run & enter
ping 192.168.1.XXX XXX=number of the other PC.

if the 2 computers are talking you will get ping results, if not you'll get an error

Dealing with TML tech support some more today, I am finding TML staff friendly and helpful. Invited to a BBQ, your tech staff reply with "I have to wash my hair, walk fictional dog" etc. Rather than being hurt, I was impressed by their professional detatchment.

Look into installing NetBUI or whatever it's called. Win2k is a dogs arse with this stuff.

I will try to find time later to look into it online

This issue has been raised to TML Tech Support Level 3.

Basic connectivity has been achieved but network file browsing is unachievable as the user has more anti-viral software installed than god.

I'm not trying to cause trouble, but one of your lvl 2 tech advisors suggested the problem was somewhere between the chair and the keyboard.
