28 Days Later

Virus film from the director of Trainspotting. They're like zombies, but FAST. It's more of a sci-fi film like the Omega Man, than a classic zombie film. The violence is pretty gruesome, in parts VERY gruesome, and while I found that satisfying, that feeling changed to discomfort shortly after - it's a bit close to the bone these days with Iraqi beheading videos floating around (which I have not seen and don't intend to.) The violence is portrayed in a particularly realistic way is what I'm trying to say. This film is well shot, the script is pretty tidy, and the characters are well developed. It's not an awesome film but it is pretty cool. There is certainly at lot more at stake than most US horror films, and the main premise is that the virus makes friends and family turn on each other, which ups the ante from "us vs them" to "all bets are off".

I enjoyed this film a fair bit too. Wasn't quite what I was expecting so it caught me pretty well. Molotovs and machetes were a pleasant surprise, but I agree with regards to the sometimes brutal realism when dudes got fucked up.

As Stompbox mentioned, it was pretty cool how they played with the concept of humanity and how quickly the line was crossed from trusted friend and fellow survivor to evil motherfucking brain-eating zombie. How long would it take for you to adapt when a crow shits blood in your fathers eye?

A tighter budgeted film that impressed me just as well was Dog Soldiers. I was anticipating a Hollywood extravaganza and was pleasantly surprised that it was just a bunch of Scots with a video camera spying on their Mums at night. Reasonable acting, explosions, a couple of nice plot-twists and an absolute fuck-load of blood pumping out of dudes. In a word, fun.

My DOG SOLDIERS review from metalshtorm.com:

WEREWOLVES ARE COOL AND TALK LIKE SOMEONE FROM 'THE BILL'

Apparently this ripsnorting British werewolf flick did a roaring trade on the festival circuit and now enjoys wide video distribution, so wherever you are it should be at your local video store.

The opening is great, they rip straight into it. I like the two characters at the start, their accents and interaction get you into the feel of it. This film has good characters, good acting, a great script with strong dialogue and plenty of action. British soldiers versus monsters in claustrophobic action scenes in a farm house - how can you possibly go wrong. You can't. Watch this movie.

SPOILER:

Skaffen that scene when the girl turns on her friend (probably boyfriend) and hacks him to bits with a machete while he's screaming is pretty gruesome hey? That was the bit that got to me. He's saying "No wait" and she starts swinging.
